Dr Evan Harris

Dr Evan Harris

Dr Evan Harris has lived in this constituency for 25 years after winning an open scholarship to read Physiology and Medicine, following a state school education in Liverpool.

After he qualified he worked for three years as a hospital doctor in acute medicine and surgery at the John Radcliffe and Churchill Hospital, and the old Radcliffe Infirmary, and then worked in public health medicine for the Regional Health Authority on issues to do with NHS staffing and training. He was a member of the British Medical Association's National Council.

He was elected to represent Oxford, Abingdon, Kidlington, and local villages in the 1997 General Election and has worked hard for local residents ever since. He has been especially focused on good quality, local health services, including successfully helping save the Abingdon Community Hospital from closure. He is leading the current campaign against the massive cuts proposed to the NHS in Oxfordshire.

Recent campaigns he has worked on include:

  • - Campaigning for a full interchange on the A34 at Lodge Hill
  • - Opposing the 'Northern Gateway' proposals between North Oxford and Kidlington
  • - Opposing the closure of Post Offices in Kidlington, Oxford, Abingdon and other villages
  • - Campaigning to stop the proposed Probation Centre in Mill Street,
  • - Campaigning for more funds to help to prevent the risk of future flooding
  • - Supporting the Low Carbon West Oxford project and OxClean
  • - Backing the 'Pro-Test' campaign
  • - Helping to Save Radley Lakes
  • - Pressing Scottish Widows to improve the Abbey Shopping Centre

Dr Evan Harris has built up a formidable reputation for campaigning on issues of principle including civil liberties, human rights, evidence based policy and, more recently, he has helped lead the Libel Reform Campaign in Parliament.

He was nominated for Channel 4's 'Campaigning Politician of the Year' Award in 2008 for his work on a range of issues.
