Lib Dem Action on Marcham Road Hold-Ups

3.21.35pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 11th Apr 2008

Local people have suffered from a lack of foresight on the part of the County Council over the temporary roadworks on the Marcham Road in Abingdon. Liberal Democrat County Councillor Lesley Legge has been actively working towards overcoming the knock-on effect of these roadworks which have gridlocked the town centre this week as well as causing long delays on the road itself. Cllr Legge immediately:

• Put in an urgent request for warning signs appropriately placed both in the town centre and on the approaches, where drivers can take action to avoid the delays

• Tried to find an alternative signed diversion route

• Requested assistance from the police to help direct traffic in the worst situation

Councillor Legge said, "The situation demonstrates the absolute need for alternative routes in and out of Abingdon. Oxfordshire County Council needs urgently to fully support Abingdon Town Council's continuing fight for both the full interchange and a new river crossing. These are important ways in which they could help Abingdon's work on Town vitality."
